From 23 to 26 September, Vietnam Clean Seafood Corporation (VINA CLEANFOOD) signed the contract of buying white-leg shrimp with 8 shrimp cooperatives/farmer groups in Hoa Tu1, Hoa Tu 2, Ngoc Dong commune, My Xuyen district. It is the starting step of implementing the project “Sustainable and Equitable Shrimp Production and Value Chain Development In Vietnam – SUSV” implemented by ICAFIS in Soc Trang, Ca Mau and Bac Lieu province.

In Soc Trang province, the shrimp production areas in My Xuyen district and Vinh Chau town get benefited from the activity. The members of cooperatives/farmer groups signed the contract of buying white-leg shrimp certified VietGAP standard and they committed that there are not antibiotic residue in their shrimp. VINA ClEANFOOD will buy their shrimp directly at their pond with the higher price than market, from 5,000 to 7,000 VND/kg. At the dialogues, both farmers and VINA CLEANFOOD representatives have discussed frankly about the contracts’ content and got consented. Mr. Ngo Cong Luan, the director of Nong Ngu 14/10 cooperative in Hoa Tu 2 commune, My Xuyen district said “The cooperative members are very happy when their cooperative signed the contract with the price which is profitable for both sites. Now the Cooperative has signed contracts of input supplying and output buying so all members feel guaranteed and only concentrate on taking care of their production activities for high productivity”.

The activity is a good and favorable launching for the new shrimp crop, shrimp producers feel happy when they would sell their shrimp with the higher and incentive price. Therefore, the activity will affect the cooperatives/farmer groups’ members positively in applying the bio-security shrimp raising process/technology. Mr. Nguyen Van Hoang, the director of Thanh Dat cooperative in Hoa Tu 1 commune, said “The cooperative members are happy with the linking model, the model will protect environment, ensure the product quality as the market requirements and help them to sell shrimp with the higher price”.

After discussions, the representatives of cooperatives/farmer groups have signed the contract with VINA CLEANFOOD with consented previously content with the witness of representatives from SUSV project management board, the Soc Trang department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Mrs. Quach Thi Thanh Binh, vice director of Soc Trang sub-department of Aquaculture said “Most of Shrimp produced in Soc Trang province is for exporting so it is very necessary to ensure hygiene and non-antibiotic residue. Therefore the linkage between farmers and processing companies will add more value to our product, ensure the food safety for exporting market and demote the small and individual production activities.”

After the signing contract activities, the Soc Trang department of Agriculture and Rural Development continues to discuss with cooperative/farmer groups on linkages with breed, feed companies and transfer advanced technologies such as using bio-product, promote shrimp raising technology without antibiotic to reduce production cost and get the higher selling price. It is the indispensable trend for shrimp production, the shrimp producers have to move toward to the value chain linking model and bio-security/sustainable shrimp farms as the objectives of the project
