In the conference “Vietnam Shrimp Industry development” organized in Ca Mau province in February this year, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc – Prime Minister of Vietnam has set the target of 10 billion USD of shrimp exporting revenue to 2025, five year earlier than the target set by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Ca Mau is considered as the capital of shrimp industry, the project “improving the productivity, quality, effectiveness and sustainable development of Ca Mau shrimp industry to 2020 and orientation to 2030” designed by Ca Mau authorities has set the target the Ca Mau shrimp exporting revenue will reach to 2 billion USD in 2020.
During the shrimp production and exporting history, with a lot of rise and fall the shrimp industry still has the good average growth rate at 6%, however the biggest shrimp exporting revenue gained in 2014 is only 4.1 billion USD, this year, 2017, VASEP predicted the number will be 3.7 billion USD, the number is one third of the set target. Looking at the mentioned figures and considering the challenges of diseases, environment pollutions, trading and technical barriers which Vietnam shrimp industry is facing, it is not easy to reach the set target of 10 billion USD. In order to meet the target it need the endeavor from not only shrimp producers, processing and exporting companies but also all actors in the Vietnam Shrimp Value Chain.
In the project “improving the productivity, quality, effectiveness and sustainable development of Ca Mau shrimp industry to 2020 and orientation to 2030” the main solution is mobilize resources from all the shrimp value chain actors to improve productivity, quality and decrease production cost which leads to increase the value, sustainability and competiveness of Vietnam shrimp on the international market. It is also the main objective of project “Sustainable and Equitable Shrimp Production and Value Chain Development In Vietnam – SusV”. Hence, on April 2, the SusV project collaborated with Ca Mau Agriculture and Rural Development Department to organize the workshop “BUILDING SHRIMP VALUE CHAIN LINKAGE MODEL FOR CA MAU” with the attending of representatives from (i) Shrimp farmer groups/cooperatives in Ca Mau, (ii) Shrimp processing and exporting companies such as Thanh Doan, Minh Phu, Minh Cuong, (iii) shrimp production input supplier companies like CP, Mien Trung VN, VietChem, Enca, Nam A Star…(iV) NGOs such as SNV, WWF and ICAFIS, (v) Ca Mau Agriculture and Rural Development Department and (vi) specially Mr. Le Van Su – Vice chairman of Ca Mau people committee also joined and expressed the commitment of local authorities to support the shrimp value chain development.
At the beginning of workshop, the representative from ICAFIS presented the status of Vietnam shrimp value chain, the challenges and solution in the implementing 48 contract farms which were facilitated by SusV project. Following are presentations on new advanced shrimp farming technologies and market trend. The workshop attendants also joined in a effective discussion on challenges in creating and implementing value chain linkages. At the end of workshop Mr. Chau Cong Bang – Vice chairman of Ca Mau Agriculture and Rural Development department promised that Ca Mau Agriculture and Rural Development department will support the shrimp value chain linkages to success.
There were 6 contract farms signed between farmer groups/cooperatives and input suppliers companies including shrimp feed, medicine, chemical and farming facilities/equipment companies. It marked a new success of improving the Vietnam shrimp value chain by SusV project.
