Earth Day is an opportunity for the world to reflect on the relationship between humanity and nature, while emphasizing the vital role each individual and community plays in protecting our planet. Among all ecosystems, the ocean — the cradle of life — now needs our care and restoration more than ever.
In celebration of Earth Day (April 22), the International Collaborating Centre for Aquaculture and Fisheries Sustainability (ICAFIS) continues to implement activities under the Blue Ocean – Blue Foods: Building Carbon Sinks in the Fisheries Sector program, with a strong focus on developing seaweed farming in coastal communities.
Together with local people, we are sowing hope from the smallest acts: a seaweed sprout, a batch of free seedlings, and a caring hand — nurturing a healthier, more resilient ocean.
Seaweed offers a natural and effective solution for addressing climate change and safeguarding marine resources. The expansion of seaweed farming contributes to:
-
Absorbing CO₂ and improving water quality,
-
Protecting marine biodiversity,
-
Creating sustainable livelihoods, especially for women in coastal areas,
-
And laying the foundation for a sustainable aquaculture sector, less dependent on fishing and fishmeal.
-
With a strong commitment to accompany coastal communities, ICAFIS is working hand-in-hand with partners and local stakeholders to provide free seaweed seedlings, offer technical guidance, and pilot farming models — step by step, building a sustainable blue marine ecosystem.
We believe that protecting the Earth does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it simply begins with planting a canopy of seaweed, safeguarding a stream of water, and empowering a community.
On this Earth Day, let us join hands with ICAFIS to act for a more sustainable future — for our oceans, and for all of us.
